Donald Glover’s "Atlanta"

Postby Tyler » Mon Dec 15, 2014 9:45 pm

Last year, we reported that Donald Glover was in talks with FX about developing a comedy called Atlanta about the city's rap scene. FX has now ordered a pilot for the show, saying, "Donald Glover is a uniquely talented actor and performer who brings real-life experience to this subject matter." Atlanta will probably have some meta-flavor, considering Glover's forays into music as Childish Gambino, who snagged two Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. Glover, who is one of the executive producers, will also star as Earnest "Earn" Marks, a college dropout who aspires to be a rap star when his estranged family member suddenly hits it big. This year is closing nicely for Glover, who was filled with uncertainty about his post-Community life.

It is no secret I have a man-crush on Gambino, so I'm glad to see his project is doing well.

So, the first two episodes were aired. It's aimed as a comedy, but that's not really it's intention. It's being compared a lot to Azis Ansari's Master of None.

Basically, they have very huge controversial issues that they discuss. Gun violence, white/black interactions, prison brutality, but they mask it in such a subtle way that it's not overly in your face.

Example: Gambino gets sent to jail for being a bystander in something. While he waits downstairs to be booked, a mentally handicapped black man comes in with a hospital gown (arrested), and basically starts talking to himself, going to the bathroom and drinking toilet water, etc. Some of the poeple go "Oh man! That guy is in here every week." The guards are on a first name basis with this guy, and everyone is having a great time. Gambino sits in the back "He's here every week? Why? This man clearly needs help" The guards tell him to shut up.

After the man plays his antics and drinks toilet water, he playfully spits it at a guard, because he is clearly disabled. The guard immediately hits the alarm, three men tackle him, and they beat the shit out of him with a baton while everyone watches and says nothing.

The show is also very funny though, and I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit more than I thought.

Sounds very heavy for a comedy. I'll probably check them out this weekend. Is Don Glover's character in the show actually his rapper name Gambino?

His name is Darius. For the show, he said he won't do any singing or rapping by himself of any sort.

Does a rap battle count as rapping by yourself? I thought it would be a lot about a rapper trying to make it.

FX’s Atlanta Premiere Had the Best Ratings of Any Basic Cable Comedy in Three Years

Including three days of DVR replays, last Tuesday’s series premiere drew 1.8 million total viewers and 1.2 million telecast viewers in the network’s target demo of adults under 50. The latter figure represents the best premiere tune-in for any basic cable comedy since 2013’s launch of Inside Amy Schumer. What’s more, Atlanta also stands as the biggest comedy debut for any FX or FXX half-hour since 2011’s Wilfred

This show is just so well done. The jokes are subtle and clever. The dialogue seems naturally and not forced. It's a quick watch, so like... Do that
