HBO Hack

Postby wags83 » Tue Aug 08, 2017 10:25 am

Hackers are demanding millions in ransom for stolen HBO data, after leaking another 3.4 gigabytes of information — including a “Game of Thrones” script summary and a month’s worth of emails from one of the company’s top executives. The hackers, who claim they have 1.5 terabytes of data in total, leaked several HBO shows last week. In a video addressed to CEO Richard Plepler, hacker “Mr. Smith” demands the company pay a multimillion-dollar ransom within three days or more data will be released.

That is insane. Are spoilers worth millions of dollars?

As long as you were confident there was nothing incriminating in the hack I wouldn't pay anything. It's not like fans are going to read the spoilers and then not watch the final 1.5 seasons of GoT...at least I wouldn't think so.

That's my thought as well. The biggest concern would be any personal information they have about HBO employees like bank account or SS numbers. The article mentioned something about having the personal emails and cell numbers for some of the GoT cast too, which I guess isn't a big deal to get that changed.

Who did you try calling first?

That's sucky for them though. Now they need to go through the hassle of changing numbers and texting everyone. "Hey, it's Kit. HBO got hacked and I had to get a new phone number."

That's just rude tbh. Like, release a spoiler or not, but don't get the actors stalked...or worse.

This is free publicity for the new season of that show, right?

They could leak it a week earlier and it wouldn't be that big of a deal. HBO leaked their own episode a week early and they didn't implode over night.
