Netflix's The Witcher

Finished the first season last night. I liked it and will watch future seasons. Kinda bummed with how little the titular character was involved in the finale, but it was still a relatively exciting battle sequence.

That's cheating!

I didn't like that either about him. I liked most of the battle, expect for the magic stuff - but I am always going to struggle with that. There are no rules with magic, except anything is possible as long as the story needs it and the power of the magic is also variable based on the story not the individual.

Yeah, I think that's a given with any sci-fi/fantasy story. I was a little bothered by the inconsistencies with how much magic you can use. Does Yennifer just have unlimited stores of "chaos" where the other mages only have a little?

No she just specs into her mage build. So her Magick recovers quicker and has higher reserves of it.

At the beginning they established that magic is almost a 1:1 relationship. In order to use magic, you had to take something away from something else. Lift a pebble, kill a flower. Those rules were never mentioned ever again. No magic had to take from something before it could be performed.

Right, that's what I was thinking too. They kind of address it with the Nilfgaard mages turning to dust after doing such extreme things. And the other mages getting bloody noses and getting tired after the things they do. But a lot of the time it didn't seem to need to take energy from anything.

They are basically Eleven from Stranger Things. Netflix loves that kind of stuff.

haha I like that quote. Interesting interview. He didn't really want to talk about the show, good or bad, at all.
Also, this question/answer seems pretty negative:
io9: What are you most looking forward to with the future of The Witcher show, which has already been renewed for season two?

Sapkowski: Allow me to quote Joe Abercrombie, the author whose books are very much to my liking: “Life is, basically, fucking shit. Best to keep your expectations low. Maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”

Ahh, the dude from Killing Eve. He always reminds me of what a lighthouse operator should look like.

Pretty accurate. This show wasn't great, but it was good enough to keep me interested in the series and start the game.
