Netflix to air 3 longform improv specials, performed by Thomas Middleditch & Ben Schwartz

Postby Blue Jackets » Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:00 am

Last year, Ben Schwartz and Thomas Middleditch took what very well may be one of the the most successful improv groups of all time, Middleditch + Schwartz, and taped multiple performances for the purposes of a comedy special. Long form improv on TV is a rare thing to see, but leave it to Ben and Thomas to figure out how to really make it work.

During his appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers last night, Schwartz announced that there will be three different specials capturing three different performances by Middleditch + Schwartz coming to Netflix soon.

These specials could be very well break new ground for long form improv, largely a discipline in comedy that only gets seen live and we personally, really can’t wait to see what the two have cooked up together in the moment.

I can't even begin to picture what this looks like. Do they get topics from the audience and turn it into a 30 minute continuous sketch?

I'll check it out as well.

This is on Netflix now. Search for "Middleditch and Schwartz". I've only seen the first one, but I can easily recommend it.

First episode was great! I wasn't sure what long form improv would be, but I loved it. They talked to an audience member for like 4 minutes and then did a 45 minute improve on it while playing multiple characters. I am very excited to watch the next two. I feel like comedians spend year(s) perfecting the perfect set and these 2 came up with it on the spot and even did callbacks to things that happened 30-40 minutes prior.

Wagner, I once watched you do an improv thing in HS, I feel like it was a different school and during a contest?

We had speech contests at SHS and also at another school but I don't remember where. We also did an example of our improv during some sort of school rally. Maybe homecoming? I don't remember.

We started this last night and watched the first 2 episodes. I was crying laughing. First episode was better than the 2nd but I still enjoyed both.

Lol, like I said, it's still good. The subject matter that they get from the audience just isn't quite as good as the first one so it just goes way off the rails.

I think 3rd is my 2nd favorite? But I also liked 2!

I really enjoyed the end of the 3rd one where they couldn't keep the characters straight since they were playing opposite characters from the opening and they switched bodies. I also liked the few times they broke characters to ask each other questions or because things were getting too real.

That's always hilarious when they can't remember who is who or what the names are or if they already established a name or not.
