anyone watch the first episode yet?
I assume this is airing live on HBO, I should catch the re-run and set to the series to record.

I watched the pilot this week. I have never played the games and really only knew a few things about the game. So spoilers to come....
-I was not expecting a 20 year time jump. I figured there had to be a jump since the game is set in a world where not many people are left, but 20 years is a lot. Pedro DOES NOT look 56 lol.
-I always assumed Ellie was somehow immune, and the game was about protecting her. I was not expecting the first episode to already explain this. I thought this would be a big reveal later in the show/game. Does it happen right away in the game too?
-Pedro is so good! Bella Ramsey is impressing me too. I wasn't sold on that casting, but I think by the end of the show I will be. It helps I don't have the video game characters to compare them to.
-The world is a lot more civilized than I thought it would be. I was expecting TWD levels of communities, but Boston has their shit together. Maybe too much of a police state, but they are doing well.
-I imagine we won't get any flashbacks over the previous 20 years? Just the story of how Joel's daughter died (one of the most heartbreaking things I've seen on TV) and now 20 years later.

It's been a while since I played the game, but I'll try to address these from my memory the best I can.
this happens pretty quickly in the game. Maybe the first 20-30 minutes.
I believe this happens within the first few hours of the game.
I don't recall any or very many flashbacks in the game.

The show runner said there were hints of how the outbreak started in the show, but it ultimately doesn't matter. And the game never addresses it. Podcast theorizes it's something to do with food, specifically flour. There were 3 or 4 times in the episode where Joel and his daughter don't eat flower.
-They don't have time for breakfast
-He forgets the cake
-She doesn't eat the cookie from the neighbor

So....the flour theory was spot on. I wasn't expecting any more flashbacks, and I suspect this will be the last one now that we know more about the origins.
Not a lot happened this episode as far as story progression, but it sure was tense! I like seeing the 2 most badass characters in the show careful and scared of the infected. It's not like TWD where the zombies are just an inconvenience. No, you need to be deliberate and careful. I do question why it took the 20 year veteran survivors so long to do headshots. Clearly body shots do nothing.

As I've said, I've never played the game, but I've been enjoying my podcast talk about the differences between the game and the show. The main one is spores vs mouth tentacles/tripwire hive mind
In the game, you have to wear gas masks a lot, especially when going inside, because you can get infected by airborne spores. In the show there are no spores (and they even had a line in ep2 mentioning them for game players). There are no mouth tentacles in the game or the smart connected network.
Danny, as the only game player, what mechanic do you like more? I'm guessing the show didn't want to have the leads in gas masks the whole season. Imagine Pedro Pascal being in a show where his handsome face is covered by a mask the majority of the time.
Also, "the kiss" scene. I thought Tess was doing that as a way to stall them more. But the show runner explained the infection froze her and forced her to receive the kiss

Thank goodness the infection neglected to freeze the hand with the lighter!

Good observation I saw on this show vs TWD. If TWD would have built the museum set, they would have found a way to use it for a season or more. TLOU built out a great set for just 15 minutes of action.

Still haven't watched the show, planning on doing that this weekend with Maria.
I don't remember spending too much time in masks, maybe 25% of game time. Mostly put on in underground transition areas and a few levels.
I'm guessing it's part not wanting leads in masks often, continuity of scenes (taking off/putting on masks), and visual effects for spore infected areas.
As of right now, the change doesn't really bother me.

Watched the first episode, seems faithful to the game. The truck scene feels very shot for shot to the game. The claustrophobic, in the back seat of truck not being able to do anything.
I think we learn about Ellie's immunity the same way.

Episode 3 was way too emotional for a zombie-esq show!

Did I just watch one of the most emotional episodes of TV ever? Holy cow. I can't believe how much I cared for these people after such a short time.

I also like how Ellie called Joel on his shit.
"It's not my fault she died. You both volunteered for this. No one made you do it" I think he needed to hear that

I thought that episode 3 would play out differently than it did. IIRC, Frank is only mentioned in the game, but you never meet him.
Bouncing back to spores vs tentacles/hive mind. I think the hive mind adds something of more persistent danger when it can feel something from a distance and send clickers to the source. I actually expected Joel and Ellie to get attacked while they were in the gas station/convenience store.
