30 Coins

Postby DannyFanny » Mon Feb 15, 2021 10:03 am

30 Coins is a Spanish horror mystery tv series originally aired on HBO Europe therefore the show is in Spanish. It has been airing on HBO on Monday nights with the season finale airing tonight. I imagine all episodes are available on HBO Max.
I think the show was overlooked and not properly marketed because it is in a foreign language. Really seems like something up Wilkins alley.

quick Wikipedia synopsis:
Father Vergara is an exorcist and ex-convict residing in the small Spanish town of Pedraza, attempting to move on from a troubled past. However, paranormal phenomena start taking place in the town and he will need the help of Paco, the mayor, and Elena, the town's veterinarian, to figure out a mystery seemingly related to a coin he owns, which might be one of the thirty pieces of silver paid to Judas Iscariot for betraying Jesus and handing him over to the Romans. The three will find themselves caught in the middle of a conspiracy involving the Holy See itself and threatening the world as we know it.

Just to give potential viewers a taste of what they are in for.
The first episode starts with a cow giving birth to a human baby. The vet, Elena, shows the video of the birth to the Mayor, Paco. Paco wanting to improve the village's image and maintain his political standing before elections hides the video from the public and tries to figure out what is going on. He shows the video to Father Vergara who claims the video is hoax. The three are now trying to solve who and why someone would go through this elaborate hoax. After following some leads, Elena goes to check on the people caring for the baby only to find it has grown to nearly adult sized in a matter of days.

Giving some thoughts on the episode. I got some Stephen King's The Dark Tower vibes especially from the mother/baby plot line in this episode. It really reminds me of Mia/Mordred.

There is nothing more that Wilkins loves than horror and subtitles.

This show is set up in a kind of "monster of the week" format. The basic episode to episode plots are pretty standard spooky show plot devices with an overarching plot of a shadowy group trying to gather the 30 coins of Judas. Father Vergara has one of these coins, so that's why all these things are happening to his village. Each episode we learn a little more of the shadow group.

Ep 2: A group of teens are playing with a Ouija board when one suddenly disappears. After using the Ouija board again, the girl reappears but can now see the auras of people and knows when people are close to dying.

Ep 3: A spooky mirror shows you your darkest regrets and fears.

Ep 6: Farther Vergara flees to the Middle East. Elena heads to Paris to be with a friend(love interest) Roque. Paco and his wife, Merche are on the outs. Two federal cops show up to start investigating all the reports being filed by the local police.

Ep 7: A former acquaintance of Father Vergara steps into the role of priest for the town. A witch bathes the town in a mysterious fog. Elena and Vergara head back to the town to face the evil.

Ep 8: Vergara, Paco, and Elena are take to hiding while the town is under the spell of the new priest. Vergara's former colleague, Fabio, is the head of the Shadow Group and comes to town to get Vergara's coin, the last of the 30.
► Show Spoiler

This show started off better than it ended, but I generally feel this away with a lot of supernatural, spooky shows. As the mystery unravels, the beats start losing the appeal. The final episode looked like a sy-fy channel movie with it's effects. Especially in the beginning.
Not a good enough watch to get someone into the genre. It's fine if you're already invested in these types of shows and can handle subtitles.
