“We’re starting talk about what could happen after Episode IX. About what could be another decade-and-a-half of Star Wars stories.”

I un-ironically love this stuff. This type of long-term thinking will eventually move humanity beyond Earth and away from our dying sun. All thanks to George Lucas.

You don't think there is too much of a good thing? Does Star Wars lose some of its magic if there is a new one every year for 15+ years?

Closest comparison is probably Marvel. They now pump out 2+ movies a year and people still love them. Marvel has been following this schedule for 7 years now?

The origin and one-off stories are fun and I'm looking forward to them, but there are only so many of them that they can make. As long as the main story movies are good and original, I'll keep seeing them.

If they start on a one movie a year path it's 13 movies. That doesn't sound like too many movies with the one offs being involved

First a grand declaration then a smaller, more thoughtful take:

1). I am a quantity over quality kind of guy. I don't hold entertainment up as a major marker in my life- I like it to be a constant theme. Can't get much more constant than yearly.

2. A steady drip of franchise films will open up fun conversations and debates about which movies are better, which whole SERIES are better, etc. It will allow the franchise to take on different "genres" within the space opera conventions. I think it'll be good fun and when the public stops caring they'll stop. For a while.

Does the same apply to TV series? I would much rather watch a show that has 10 tight episodes vs one with 16 and half of them are filler. Don't even get me started on CW 23 episode seasons....

Depends on the type of show for me. I'd like silicon valley to have a few more episodes a season because it always feels rushed. However more intense dramas should mostly be 10

Difference there is that Silicon is a 30 minute comedy. But I agree, 30 minute comedies like B99 and Last Man on Earth work out well around 20 episode. Silicon is more story heavy than those shows though, but Last Man is comparable

Seconded! A lot of it has to do with how much the show depends on story. For example, I like the shorter seasons for Game of Thrones. If a show is more about jokes or a serialized format (I am thinking of Archer or the British Baking Show) then pile up as many as you want, don't make no nevermind to me.

What are your thoughts on this? This is a favorite talking point this week on my podcasts. Boring and safe? Who would you like to have seen?

I'm not a great film directing mind, so I don't have a bit opinion on it either way. I think it's fine, he did a good enough job with TFA. Hopefully the story becomes a bit more original than TFA, but that probably depends on the one that comes out this winter.

Part of me is excited about this and part of me wonders if Star Wars is just going to become an umbrella universe for anybody who wants to make a Sci-fi space film.

Will this start after episode 9, starting over the next group of related movies while every other year does "stories"?

That's what I'm not sure about. It says it will be all new characters and not focused on the Skywalker saga that the main storyline has always focused on. So it could probably fall anywhere on a Star Wars timeline.
