The Ritual (On Netflix)

Postby cwilkins88 » Fri Mar 02, 2018 8:37 pm

For the horror lovers out there, this movie is not super original.

Something bad happened in the past, a group of friends travel to a backpacking site in order to grieve for the one lost, stumble across a place in the woods, and then some weird voodoo shit happens and they start going crazy. It's been done.

But this does it much better. The story, the acting, and the decisions are believable. The camera work is phenomenal and its nice that a movie that finally reveals 'the monster' has such a huge payoff. Here's the trailer:

God this movie was a breath of fresh air. I came into this movie with some assumptions but none of these were upheld.

I respect the director for not going for not going the easy jumpscare route and creating believable conflict that makes us invested in the characters.

It had both solid practical and CGI effects so I wasn't let down there. And overall the film had a strong polish on it that really sold the atmosphere it created. One problem I did have with it was the pacing. If they had tightened that up a little it would have been damn near perfect.

Really enjoyed the whole experience and hope to see more horror like this in the future.

Oh that part where he punches the old woman was just great. Easily my favorite part of the film.

The blonde lady mentioning that worshipping the creature gave them extended life. That's what the roomful of half dead mummies were? Still alive and worshipping?

That was my assumption. That might have been the creepiest scene of the movie.

Why is this getting so much praise when barely fresh on RT (71%) and 58% audience?
