'That's not how math works"

Postby Tyler » Fri Jul 29, 2016 10:23 am

Sears is going out of business near our house. We stopped in there yesterday just to check out the deals.
Rugs were marked down 70% off with a sign that said "80% off lowest ticket price". I was confused if that meant it was 80% off the already marked down rug or 80% off the original price. The following conversation happened.

me to store clerk: Question on the 80% off lowest price. Does that mean this $75 already discounted rug would have an additional 80% off?
Employee: Let's think about that. What is 80% off of 70%?
Jocelyn: It would be about--
Employee: I would be paying you to take the rug
us: *dumbfounded looks*
Employee: It is 70% off already and you want another 80% off of that? I would literally be giving you money to take the rug. *laughs in our face*
Jocelyn: That's not how math works.
*walk away as she is still laughing at us with a different person that was passing by*

WE AREN'T DUMB! SHE IS! You are allowed to be dumb, wrong, or rude - not all 3.

Why would you ask such a dumb question?

Its too bad she didn't just get frustrated and give it to you for five bucks. Then again, we can't all be Bryan.

Man, I'm frustrated just reading that. There's so much I want to say to that lady but I feel like it would all be for nothing because she wouldn't understand.

Lol. I don't think she was that dumb. I think she was adding 70%+80% = 150% off. She didn't think it was possible to apply a discount and then apply an additional one to that new price.

That's really not MUCH better.

I think the one at the Mall of America is staying open from what I've seen.
