Google Duo - cross platform video calling app

Postby Tyler » Wed Aug 17, 2016 7:38 am

We've discussed this before, I'm annoyed with all of the different messaging apps that I have on my phone that basically do the same thing.
-Text messenger
-Hangouts
-Facebook Messenger
-I know others have Whatsapp, Slack, etc.

Now I have multiple video messaging apps.
-Hangouts - Platform I prefer to use with friends. Can use on desktop and multiple users
-Skype - I only still use Skype because I can't Facetime with my parents. It is nice to be able to use on desktop with a nice 1080p webcam and occasional group call
-Duo - Might be useful if I can get my parents to install, but does it offer anything more than Skype does?

Is Duo worth keeping? Here are the pros/cons that somewhat matter to me
Pros:
-no login is required. It works through your phone number, not a Google account
-iOS and Android compatible
-encrypted
-Knock Knock feature (Android only, mostly a gimmick)

Cons:
-1 on 1 chat only
-no tablet or desktop supoprt. - my parents like Facetiming from the iPad, but the tablet has to be able to make calls in order to use Duo
-another app on my phone

There was a phase in college that I used Skype as my only desktop IM client, I would video call way more than socially acceptable. No one uses Skype anymore, other than my mom and Wilkins.

Skype does 1080p video though, I think Hangouts is only 720p.

Downloaded it yesterday morning. Haven't used it to call anyone yet. I like that it shows which of your contacts have the app at the top of the list.

To me, this seems like Google's attempt to keep Video Calling and IM separate. I'm more interested in Allo, since I don't typically do much video calling. The highlights of Duo for me are:

1. Doesn't require an account, just requires phone number validation.
2. "Knock, knock" - a feature that shows what the caller is doing prior to answering the call.
3. Cross Platform (FaceTime is not, but others like Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Hangouts are)

This app will live and die by it's install base. The more people that download it and are available to call, the better it will be.

Allo and Duo were in Google Play as soon as they were announced at Google I/O. Instead of "Install" button there was a "Notify" option. Once the app was available for download in Google Play I got a notification.

Ahh, I forgot about the app 'pre-ordering' deal they do in Google Play now.

I'm a nerd and check the app every couple days to see if anyone new has downloaded it. I noticed my mom was able to download and verify it on her own (I did tell her about it, but didn't show her it). I successfully called her last night. We were both on WiFi and there were zero issues with voice or video.

Last night both my phone and Jocelyn's wouldn't trigger the speaker phone for Duo, only the earpiece speaker. Weird that it happened to both of us at the same time, has anyone else seen this before?
