Google's October 4th Event

Postby Tyler » Tue Oct 04, 2016 2:56 pm

Talking with Simo about this. Neither of us use Spotify, but often play music via Youtube music videos (I do mostly for Evie). I think with this I can say "Okay Google, play The Hamsterdance Song on Youtube" and it will play it locally on the device or casting it to a Chromecast. Playing it locally is something I would rather have it do.

I don't think Echo can play Youtube audio like that.

I also wonder if Google Home can play podcasts. Echo can, but only the most recent episode of a show.

I preordered the Home. Can't wait to have a device that can answer basic questions. The Echo fails 90% of the time. I also have two Chromecast Audios so having the ability to tell Google to play stuff anywhere in the house will be neat.

I did as well. First from Google, but then cancelled when I saw it might not be delivered for 8 days after release. Was going to order from Best Buy or Walmart but saw they didn't confirm if they would have them in stock on release day. Ordered again from Google

That was funny, but odd Google used a video of harassment as their opening

I pre-ordered the Home and also have Dot on pre-order. I plan to plot a way to make them get in a fight or figure out how to delegate one to the other ala "Ok Google, tell Alexa to make me a sandwich".

I couldn't justify a Pixel when my 5X is still kicking ass. Doesn't mean I won't pick one up on a Black Friday deal.

I cancelled my Google Home from the Google Store. Corey/Feddersen are receiving their phones a week late from the Google Store so I will just buy it from Best Buy on launch day like I did with the phone. I will also use the free $100 gift card Best Buy gave me to put towards Home.

Out this Friday. Waiting for the review embargo to go up so I can start reading about the device.

Comes out tomorrow and there still aren't any hand on reviews published. Google either didn't give review units or they aren't allowed to publish the article until the last minute.

Reviews are out. They are okay
Cnet - 3.5/5
THE GOOD With Google Assistant built-in, Google Home integrates with Google Calendar, Maps and even Chromecast, so it gives you personalized answers. Say the word, and Home can also control your smart home gadgets or send music and video to your TV and speakers.
THE BAD Home can't personalize for multiple family members, and its integrations with other Google services don't allow a lot of give and take -- you can't create appointments in your calendar or make a to-do list. As a smart home controller, Home only works with four platforms.
THE BOTTOM LINE While Google Home shows a ton of potential, it's currently not as versatile or useful as Amazon Echo -- though we expect it to improve in the days and months ahead.
Verge - 8/10
Engadget - 79/100
Pros
Tasteful design
Access to Google's massive knowledge graph
Google Assistant is conversational and context aware
Chromecast integration has the potential to be a killer feature
Cons
Speaker quality is only so-so for music
Limited third-party app support compared to Amazon
A handful of expected features aren't available at launch
Wired - 7/10

Right now, here's what you can ask the Home to do:
Add items to a shopping list
Check your calendar
Set an alarm
Snooze that alarm
Set a timer
Tell you about the weather
Check traffic for your commute to work
Play the news
Answer a question involving a quick Google search
Perform a calculation
Call an Uber
Play a customized daily briefing including traffic, weather and a news briefing you curate with the app

Some of the things the Home can't yet do include:
Remove items or change your shopping list
Add entries to your calendar -- WHAT?!
Integrate multiple calendars
Give you directions
Send directions to your phone
Create lists other than a shopping list
Set reminders
Interact with email

It's a pretty cool toy. I have Google Music with it and it's impressive the songs it can find. "Hey google, play the theme song to rocket power". It couldn't find Catdog or Wild Thornberries though.

Even cooler is the ability to have a conversation. Siri and Alexa can not refer to a previous answer when asking a new question, this can.
