I took my 3rd ever Uber ride tonight. First in Des Moines. I didn't realize drivers didn't know where the passengers are going or what the fair is until they confirm it. Lady was probably pissed she had to drive to Carlisle and miss out on money all the way back.

Lyft surges to the top 10 on Apple’s App Store following the #DeleteUber campaign

People were angry that Uber appeared to be taking advantage of a taxi strike at JFK in order to promote its car-hailing service. The company had tweeted that surge pricing at JFK had been switched off, shortly after the NY Taxi Workers Alliance called for a stop on pickups at the airport in response to what they said was the “inhumane, unconstitutional ban of Muslim refugees and travelers.”

The Taxi Workers Alliance had asked all drivers, Uber included, to not pick up at JFK on Saturday, January 28th from 6 PM to 7 PM as a means of protesting Trump’s immigration and refugee ban.

“We cannot be silent. We go to work to welcome people to a land that once welcomed us,” the taxi union had written on Twitter.

Uber Is Doomed
After a discombobulated 2016, in which Uber burned through more than $2 billion, amid findings that rider fares only cover roughly 40 percent of a ride, with the remainder subsidized by venture capitalists, it’s hard to imagine Kalanick could take the company public at its stunning current valuation of nearly $70 billion.

I don't understand how Uber can be losing money. They don't own their cars and get a cut of every fair for doing nothing.

Maybe they should stop their R&D department looking into flying cars.

Right, tech support for the app and marketing can only cost so much. How much did they spend on deploying self driving cars in the cities those are in?

Uber Fares Will Soon Be Based On How Much Uber Thinks You’re Willing To Pay

If you’ve ever hailed an Uber ride and thought afterward that you paid a lot less than you should have, those days may soon be over. The company’s latest change to its pricing model will offer you a rate that isn’t based purely on time and distance, but on what Uber’s computers think you’ll be willing to pay.

Uber executives revealed the “route-based pricing” system in an interview with Bloomberg today, noting that the currently-being-tested fare-setting system will be used in the 14 cities where Uber carpooling service is available.

Driving Uber wasn't a bad experience but the pay was sooo not worth the hours I put in. From what I've gathered, you can only really make decent pay by working the after-bar hours (noo thankie, drunkie pukey), or putting in 60+ hours a week.

If you like driving (meh), don't mind a little extra wear on your car and strangers in your car, it's okay for some okie doke side cash but that's about it. I don't drive anymore but I still refer people if they want to try it out because it gets them a 100$ bonus and gets me a free $200 for exploiting my friends... I mean... helping them out.

I've paid for one Uber and the guy picked me up from the airport and took me to Indianola. He brought it up four times that people normally go to Urbandale and wouldn't have picked me up otherwise.

Corey on here use to drive Uber and would only do it during bar hours/surcharge nights because that's when it was most worth it, but I understand you not wanting drunks in your car.

We were down in St. Louis in March the weekend after their big Mardi Gras weekend. Our Uber driver said drivers were making $1200 that Saturday night.

Sadly no.

"Sioux Falls residents shouldn't expect to see ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft pop up in the city anytime soon.

The city and state have approved insurance laws allowing the companies operate in the state so long as they agree to collect and submit sales tax revenues.

That's a potential deal breaker for the services, but the city plans to stand its ground, a state lawmaker and former city councilor said Wednesday."

What's the cab situation like? If you were downtime drinking could you easily get a cab home?
