NFL pledges to cut down on commercial breaks to speed up games

Even though they rebounded in the post season, the NFL has been vocal about the need to speed up games and change the structure of commercial breaks.
In a letter to fans on Wednesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell explained how those changes would take place.
The NFL plans to use a play clock after the extra point to get back to the action faster. It may also use a play clock after touchdowns. Another idea under consideration: standardizing the length of halftimes during all games to reduce downtime.

What is used now? The game starts whenever feels like it?

I never realized halftime length wasn't standard.

Werd to halftime length. Always seemed like a 15 minute TV break. I have the least problem with NFL game lengths compared to baseball and basketball.

The problem I see with speeding up the game is more injuries.

Baseball i totally get, Taran wont watch it with me. I LOVE baseball but i understand if you didnt it would suck cause it is so slow.

Basketball is SO much better than Football as far as speed, it is not even relatively close. College Basketball is beautiful because it is done in 2 hours, where as college football is 3 to 4 hours. not close. Same for NBA and NFL nba much shorter. Nba (2 to 2 1/2 hours) NFL 3 hour minimum. closer to 3 1/2 usually.

Usually just 1. I think the opening week they have 2 Thursday games. Only reason I know that is because the Vikings played in the late one a couple years ago so I was up super late on a work night watching football.

You're the most irresponsible person I know!

Have Thursday night games always been a thing? Does it serve a point other than the NFL wanting 1 more night to make money?

They probably started Thursday games between 5 and 10 years ago. That's as precise as I can get.

the Halftime at regular season games is 12 min, standard through out the league. Super Bowl halftime is 30 min.

There is a major difference in commercials depending on which station you watch football on. CBS is the worst. For both NFL and College games, CBS takes numerous commercial breaks, which extends the games and is very annoying. Fox typically have games that last 3 hours to 3.5 hours. CBS games typically got near 4 hours because of all the commercial breaks. As a season ticket holder and football fan, this is very frustrating as your weekend gets dominated by watching games that last too long.

From what I've heard regarding the change in commercials is that there are going to be the same number of commercials, but they aren't going to break as often, just have longer breaks. So I guess it's about the same?
