Amazon: We're lowering Whole Foods prices on Monday.

Postby Blue Jackets » Fri Aug 25, 2017 6:35 am

Amazon said Thursday that its takeover of Whole Foods (WFM) will close on Monday, and its first order of business will be to make some items more affordable, according to a release.
"Whole Foods Market will offer lower prices starting Monday on a selection of best-selling grocery staples across its stores, with more to come," the company said in a statement.

Items that will be marked down on Monday include organic avocados, organic brown eggs, organic salmon, almond butter, organic apples and organic rotisserie chicken. Amazon said it'll keep the markdowns coming, and that Amazon Prime members will get additional discounts at Whole Foods.

This is coming from Amazon, who will jack up prices before a sale so the "sale price" looks bigger.

Will Whole Foods stores get turned into those Amazon stores that were posted about last year or so?
Edit: The stores are called Amazon Go, just looked it up.

The ones where you just walk out without paying? I can't imagine. That seems very expensive to convert all the stores to that, and those were much smaller stores I think.

Buuuuuuut, would it be less expensive overall to never have to pay a cashier ever again?

It's day one, and Amazon is already selling Echo speakers at Whole Foods
Avocado pricing has also dropped, as promised
https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/28/1621 ... ce=twitter
As promised, Amazon has dropped prices on select Whole Foods products. Meats appear to be receiving the deepest price cuts, with Atlantic salmon filets dropping from $14.99 to $9.99 per pound and ground beef dropping from $6.99 to $4.99 per pound. Organic fuji apples are now $1.99 instead of $3.49 a pound, while organic brown eggs only dropped from $4.29 to $3.99 per dozen.

But we all know you’re really here for avocado prices: the organic millennial fruit starts at $2.79 in most stores but will now cost $1.99 per avocado. That’s comparable to many supermarket chains in most major cities. Whole Foods is signifying price cuts in-stores with an orange tag, complete with the Amazon logo slapped across.

$2 per avocado is comparable?! I guess mine aren't organic? I think Fareway/Hy-Vee are usually $1 or 3 for $4

Your HyVee must be better than ours. I don't usually shop at HyVee but once I saw they had avocados "On sale" for 2 for $5.
We usually get them for $.99 at Aldi.

The salmon and organic Fuji apples prices sound more competitive but not enough to draw me in. The other prices are still higher than Fresh Thyme, which has been my new favorite for affordable organic/specialty groceries. I wonder what other strategies they'll use to try to beat out the grocery competition.
