Water Softener
Water Softener
Who has one? My parents do and showers feel amazing there. I was over at Tylersucks's over the weekend and he just got done installing one on his own. He said it took 30 minutes and less than $400 for everything. He has inspired me to look into it.
I think I'm going to mcnards today to get a water test strip (free over by the water softeners). The type of softener you need is dependent on your current water.
Bad thing about water softener is the taste of tap water. I don't think it will be easy to hook it up to all water but the sink, so it might be all or nothing. We will just have to start drinking filtered water from the fridge and no more of the best tap water in the state.
Worth noting, McNards has theirs on sale until the 30th.

My parents also have one but I guess I haven't noticed too much of a difference between their showers and ours.

the water tastes like shit. my parents have one and i hate it. our water at our home always leaves a white residue (like salt) and it's super gross when you think that goes into your body.

Dishes should be coming out cleaner with soft water!CrckrJack wrote:the water tastes like shit. my parents have one and i hate it. our water at our home always leaves a white residue (like salt) and it's super gross when you think that goes into your body.

Its on my to-do list at some point. I think we have pretty hard water but I've never tested it. The stainless in our showers and sinks has white residue all over it that is super hard to get clean.
Re: Water Softener
I picked up free testing strips from Menards over lunch. I'll test it tonight and buy a softener on Friday based on the results.

Did you do the tests? It does not seem like many water softeners exist in Maine. I remember working at hy vee win Sheldon and loading up bags upon bags of softener salt daily. I have never seen salt sold anywhere here.

The test I got was funky. I will get a different one tomorrow from Lowe's or Home Depot.

Your water is already mostly soft!

i think our rural water isn't too bad, maybe should test it out. everyone get a test
Re: RE: Water Softener
Yeah, that scale is weird. The ones on the far right must be huge edge cases.wags83 wrote:Your water is already mostly soft!
I'm glad it's not more to the right though, because those require much more expensive systems. I'll get the 2nd most basic one tomorrow.
Re: Water Softener
Took more time buying the stuff at McNards than it did installing. Tylersucks did almost all of it but he let me try helping so I felt included. Thanks to $6 fittings (compared to normal $1 traditional PVC) it is literally just snap together. No glue, no crimping, nothing. Very easy job

I tried explaining water softener to a friend of mine from New Jersey. He thought I was crazy. So apparently it isnt a thing everywhere.
Re: Water Softener
Maybe the east coast has softer water? Brad, I'll mail you a test strip.

I was going to stop at Lowe's and see if we even have softeners for sale

Re: Water Softener
Did you have to cut out part of the existing pipe?
Re: RE: Re: Water Softener
This is where mine would need to hook in. I assume you you cut out that horizontal pipe or remove it somehow and snap the new connectors on each end?Corey wrote:Did you have to cut out part of the existing pipe?
