19 Reasons why the "Lost at Sea" surivival story smells fishy

Postby Blue Jackets » Wed Nov 01, 2017 8:54 am

In case you haven't heard about it.

Here’s their account of what happened, in brief:
They set off from Hawaii in May of this year, bound for Tahiti. They were caught in a storm that both ruined their engine and rendered their mast and sails useless. They were unable to contact help. They drifted for five months, living off of dry food and a handheld watermaker (takes the salt out of seawater so you can drink it) until they were rescued by a fishing boat and, eventually, the Navy.

This article picks it all apart. Long, but good read.

I knew nothing about their claims or about sailing, but that was an entertaining article. He pokes so many giant holes in their story.

This is hilarious. They got called out soooo hard. Also, the IASIP implication joke made me laugh at the end. I liked reading this.

I was looking more into it earlier today after reading this article. One of the ladies is an aspiring actress. 100% chance of this whole story being a publicity stunt to get her more exposure.

I really want them to get on some TV show and then just get drilled. Have the author of this article interview them

Was looking for an update on this. Found some

GoFundMe page started by them to battle the media who lied. $15 of their $50,000 goal raised
"It was amazing to see people with zero ocean experience talk about whether or not I should have used the EPIRB. Do they know the use of an EPIRB without a sinking boat will most likely get you a fine, jail time and the guaranteed loss of the vessel? People I know have been put in jail, been fined and lost their boat for EPIRB calls that were not deemed true emergencies. Floating boats with food, water and limited navigational capacity are not maritime emergencies."

'It was simpler at sea': Sailors rescued in Pacific grapple with skepticism at home
Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiava say they miss life in their sailboat as they face doubts from sailing experts over their stories of giant storms and shark attacks

Interview a week after their rescue. Guy calls out some of their claims.

That GoFundMe page was hilarious, but not in an intentional way. Wow....
