Squirrel Stream

Postby Tyler » Fri Nov 20, 2020 11:10 pm

I've already pimped this out to some here. Over the past couple of weeks I moved the squirrel feeder from the tree to the deck. I've been making slight improvements since. The newest version has a 30 foot rope from the tree to the deck in hopes that the squirrels would use it. I was watching it locally on my cams, but my coworkers asked me to live stream it. I've done it 2 days and have captured some fun stuff. A deer showed up today within minutes of turning on the stream, first time I have seen a deer in almost 2 years near my house and it was 5 feet from my deck. The squirrels started using the rope today too, previously they were just using the deck stairs. At one point today there were 3 squirrels.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxlpJc ... bCDXw/live -- this will go to the stream when it is live, otherwise it has the archive. I added some time stamps to the title if anyone wants to see the deer or rope.

I started this for maybe a fun thing for Evie to watch while home on the weekends since we never leave the house, but I am way into it more than she is.

Is there a time of day when the squirrels are more active?

Usually in the morning. 8:30-12 or so, I did notice it was later today tho I assume because of the cold. I set up a twitter account that will automatically tweet out when there is one feeding today based on motion. I found out tho that it only allows 25 tweets a day and I reached that very quickly.

I bought 2 different cameras that come tomorrow. It will now be a 3 camera setup. The one currently in the feeder is pretty buggy (it's a $25 indoor Wyze cam that I had to use a hack to live stream).

Twitter bot saves the day.

Are you worried about a squirrel getting stuck?

additionally, could you set the bot not to tweet if it has tweeted with the past 15-30 minutes?

I hope not! If a squirrel gets that fat then they don't need to be coming to my feeder.

I am trying to find a way to do that so it doesnt blow through the 25 tweets within the first feeding. I need to enlist help from Corey to add a cooldown timer to the motion sensor itself, because the Twitter program doesn't allow it.

Thanks Corey for the programming help! We will test later today or tomorrow. Not sure if the limit will be reset today or not.

Looks like it won't be sending any more tweets, but I think the backend is working. I currently have it set to wait 15 minutes before sending another tweet. True test will be tomorrow.

I won't lie, it is been a big highlight in my day the last couple weeks iterating on this and sharing the progress with people that don't care nearly as much as I do. It's been fun to play with new technology and just being able to look out the window and see some nature a few feet away.

I think being stuck home alone during the work day after months is finally getting to my sanity.

I think I have the twitter thing fixed, but I need some squirrels to know for sure! None are out because of the rain.

I also have the new cameras set up.

Lol. One on now. I think it is fully working. There was a delay in the tweet, but not sure I can fix that.

I did discover a problem tho, that it sends a notice when the squirrel leaves, which is kind of lame, but of course I can't do anything about that either.
