Tyler's VR Game Recommendations

Postby Tyler » Wed Feb 21, 2018 8:23 am

One stop shop for the games I have been recommending/sharing with most of the CPT VR gamers. Direct links to their dedicated threads where I talk about the game in more detail. I also included what platform I own the game on. A lot of games are available on both Oculus/Steam, but when available I buy it via Steam so I can share.

SPC = Single Player with a Campaign. Green text means I've finished the main campaign (on normal when there are difficulty options)
SP = Single player, no campaign. Can't "beat" the game because it is endless modes or no story
MP = True Multiplayer. Playing along side and talking, not just beating someone's recorded and shared score

System Sellers
Beat Saber - SP - Steam - Guitar hero + fruit ninja. This is an amazing VR game that anyone can pick up and play
Brass Tactics - SPC - 12hrs/MP - Oculus - best RTS game in VR. One of my favorite games. Even if you don't like RTS games you have to try the free demo.
Rec Room - MP - Steam/Oculus - needs no explanation. New quest will be out very soon and we will start playing it again I bet

Must Plays
Archery in The Lab - SP - Steam - Everyone who is new to VR loves this game
Red Matter - SPC - 2hr - Oculus - Space puzzle story game. Slow paced, but very rewarding. Slight horror
Robo Recall - SPC - Oculus - We all know and love it. Vive players need to give it a try
Lone Echo - SPC - 7hrs - Oculus - Space adventure with a cool story. Great mechanics
Space Pirate Trainer - SP - Steam - best wave shooter I've played. single player/party mode wave base shooter. Something I would play more of if I had more friends' scores to beat
Star Trek Bridge Crew - MP - Steam/Oculus (Uplay) - one of the best co-op games. Seated gameplay
Super Hot - SPC - 3hrs - Steam - don't let the graphics turn you off. One of the best shooters
VR The Diner Duo - MP - Steam - best asymmetrical multiplayer game for VR. Everyone loves this game

Great
Gorn - SPC/MP - Steam - bloody, goofy, and dumb. Extra fun with local multiplayer
Defense Grid 2 - SPC - 13hr - Oculus - 'Bloons in VR in space. Good sit-down game
Duck Season - SPC -1hr - Steam - not the game you think it is. Tons of mini games/Easter eggs to discover. Can be beat in an hour
Job Simulator - SPC - Steam - Best intro to VR game. No locomation but tons of things to do
Pixel Ripped 1989 - SPC - 2.5hrs - Steam - plays best with an Xbox controller, but don't let that discourage you. Great game within a game type game. The first 30 minutes of this game is a must play
Sprint Vector - MP - Steam - very physical racing game. Basically Mario Kart, but on skates.

Good
Batman Arkham VR - SPC - 1hr - Steam - Detective game that can be beat in one long session. I had to cheat a few times
BlazeRush - SP/MP - Oculus - RC car racing. No touch controllers. Available on Go and Rift. Fun little race game.
The Climb - SP - Oculus - Realistic mountain climbing. I need to explore this one more
Cloudlands : VR Minigolf - MP - Oculus - mini golf that supports local and online multiplayer
Dead and Buried - MP - Oculus - Multiplayer western. Pretty fun modes
Eleven Table Tennis - MP - Steam - some of the best haptic feedback in VR
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes - MP - Steam - I haven't played the VR version, but I imagine it improves the already fun game
Pavlov - MP - Steam - VR Counter-Strike
Portal Stories - SPC - 30mins - Steam - if you are a fan of Portal this is a must play. Can easily be beat in one session
Rick and Morty VR - SPC - 2.5hrs - Steam - Job Simulator but with Rick and Morty. Must play for fans of show
SportsBar VR - MP - Oculus - Fun way to kill time in VR with friends. Lots of things to interact with

Okay
Accounting - SPC - 30mins - Steam - Free. created by Rick and Morty creator. Only play if you are a fan of the show
Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR - SPC - 2hrs - Steam - You play as an ape breaking out of a compound. It has some good gunplay, but the movement is really sluggish.
HordeZ - SPC - Steam - I haven't haven't played this myself, but everyone that does seems to really like it.
Killing Floor: Incursion - SPC/MP - Steam - so scary/in your face that I had to return it
Rip Coil- SP - Oculus - robot Frisbee
Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay - SPC - 10mins - Steam - fun 10 minute experience
Widlands - SPC - Steam - early VR game updated for touch. People really like this game. Extreme locomotion
Xing - SPC - I feel bad for having this low. The slow gameplay just didn't hook me after an hour. If I am playing a slow game I want a seated experience. Amazing graphics though

Meh
Edge of Nowhere - SPC - Oculus - controller 3rd person game. Reminds me a lot of Tomb Raider. I'm sure this was great before Touch came out, but I have no interest to play this type of game right now
Lucky's Tale - SPC - Oculus - I feel bad I didn't give this game a better try. Not interested in sitting controller based games right now
Vive Night at Freddy's - SP - free unofficial game. I don't know the mobile game so I didn't know how to play this
Zombie Riot - SP - Oculus - I got it for free. Another game that was probably fun early on but doesn't quite hold up now

Bad
KFC VR Escape Room - SPC - posting here so you don't bother with it

Must Have Apps
BigScreen - Steam - no duh. Can't wait (but also can) to start watching TWD this Sunday in there
VRchat - Steam - hard for me to call this a game. It is a social app that is a lot of fun to screw around in
Google Earth VR - Steam - VR's killer app for a lot of people
Welcome to Light Fields - Short demo of a 3D photography system

Backlog:
Ethan Carter

Wish List
I Expect You to Die - SPC - Steam - escape room game. Still waiting for someone to share it...
Torn - Puzzle game
Moss - 3rd person mouse platformer
Kin - Oculus Go VR puzzle platformer
Twilight Path - short puzzle game.
Subnautica
Budget Cuts
Megaton Rainfall
Kittypocalypse

Space Pirate Trainer. Job Simulator for those that don't like shoot 'em ups.

Neither game requires locomotion. No buttons needed other than trigger. SPT can switch guns with the pad/stick, but if you put them on the machine gun pistols they won't need to switch.

The bow/arrow game in The Lab is one that I always show people who aren't into video games/haven't used VR before. Same kind of thing where you don't need to use any locomotion and there aren't a bunch of buttons to figure out, but you still move around and use your whole body for the full VR experience.

Added more details to the list

SPC = Single Player with a Campaign. Green text means I've finished the main campaign (on normal when there are difficulty options)
SP = Single player, no campaign. Can't "beat" the game because it is endless modes or no story
MP = True Multiplayer. Playing along side and talking, not just beating someone's previous score

Just realized Oculus has hours played recorded. Updated the big post to include how long the story games took me.
