Bigscreen (VR)

Not technically a game, but I'll post it here anyways.

BigScreen is basically turning your desktop into social movie theater experience. You can create rooms and invite friends, or leave it open for random people to join. Inside of the room you can change the environment from a home theater, to a living room, to a giant 100' movie theater screen. Each room allows up to 4 people, but the movie theater environment has NPCs to add to the experience. Once in the environment you can take turns displaying on the big screen and have your own screen in front of you. We hopped around to different rooms last night where people were matching movies together and tv shows.

I have to admit that it was pretty surreal sitting on my couch at home but having it look like I was in a movie theater. The immersive was excellent. Biggest limitation is the resolution of the headset. You can read enough text to get through the menus, but you couldn't do any real computer work in the app.

Brad, this is the VR app that Tested used that one time for the show they recorded in VR.

There are some 18+ rooms that we tried out of curiosity, but won't be doing that again.

I watched liked 30 minutes of a movie in this app. It was pretty cool. Resolution wasn't the best, but not bad enough to not use it. I only stopped because it's in possible to eat snacks while wearing the headset.

I read this morning that the team behind Bigscreen want to open up the theater to 20 players eventually. They can't do more than 20 for legal reasons. If you rent a movie and invite more than 20 people over to watch it you are technically a venue and need to pay licensing fees/royalties. Keeping Bigscreen under 20 keeps the heat off of the devs when users share their Netflix stream with people.

Like I said in the GoT thread, 3 of us watched that together last night in Bigscreen. I had some connection issues towards the end, but otherwise it was pretty slick. The resolution/upload of the screen isn't the best, but it didn't matter for the majority of the screens.

The biggest issue with everything was that the social aspect was more entertaining than parts of the episode, and it was a really good episode. BigScreen gives you a bunch of tools to use while sitting in your theater chair and we kept playing with those. Maybe after the new-ish of the app wears off it will be easier to focus on a TV/Movie while watching together.

We used the movie theater and home theater rooms. I think I liked the home theater the best.

It was pretty neat. But yeah, we were too busy messing with each other and the tools that I feel like I missed a bit of the show.

Watched TWD with Corey and Wags in Bigscreen last night. I would totally be game for doing it every week. It still seems harder than it should be to get the audio to work, but once it's going it was flawless for me (but Corey had some lag when a 4th member joined.) Next time I think we should take the time to set up a private room and it should be Rock solid.

Things worked better for me last night than they did back when we tried watching GoT. I kept having disconnects the time we watched that.

Watching GoT in VR was fun too but it made it a little hard to follow some things. TWD is the perfect show to watch with a group and crack jokes.

If the $200 all-in-one Oculus could do BigScreen (without hands and without mirroring your own desktop) it would be a great product. But someone would still need to be on desktop to host the show/movie.

Yeah, it was better with TWD than GoT because I don't care if I miss a little bit of TWD due to screwing around/making jokes.

Are they every going to allow more than 4 people in a room?

Well I saw that, I was curious if there were any updates on that because it's obviously not been changed from 4.

Also, Tyler and I may or may not have gone into an 18+ room called "huge boners"

Wags!!!! You're going to get us in trouble.

I liked when the host asked if we knew each other because we were both funny together.
"Nope, we just both share the common interest of this room"

I said "may or may not" but now you gave it away! I was very confused as to what they were doing, because they didn't even have anything up on the screen and then they asked if we had any pr0n videos with "good plot".

The concept of pr0n rooms in BigScreen is weird, but I guess not surprising considering that's what happens with every kind of social technology eventually.

I tried playing Shadows of War in BigScreen over the weekend. I thought the resolution would kill it for me, but it was easy to forgot about that because it felt like I was playing on a screen the size of a house. I opted for The Void room and made the screen as close as possible while still being able to see everything.

Unfortunately I didn't play this way for long. I should have opened Fraps, because I felt like I was getting 10 frames a second. I could have tweaked with BigScreen settings (like not done 2x Super Sampling) or turned Shadows of War down from Ultra, but I didn't want to spend 15 minutes finding the sweet spot. I ended up just taking off my headset and playing it on the monitor like a scrub. I think there is potential though if you aren't playing such a graphically demanding game.
