Oculus VR announces Oculus GO, a standalone VR gadget for $199

I knew this product was coming but I still think it's a weird move. This is basically for people who want the smartphone VR experience (Google Daydream or GearVR), but do not own a smartphone that works on those viewers. It has limited head tracking and no hand. I guess it would be good to consume media

People got hands on with it yesterday at GDC and everyone seemed pretty impressed with it. It sounds dumb, but I would consider this just for watching Big screen with you guys. Worth $200? Probably not, but maybe if resolution is higher, plus being able to sit anywhere.

Got around to watching this today while Evie napped. Lighter, better lenses, and better screen. I am probably going to be buying this for watching movies/tv shows. I also read that they are somehow allowing you to use a USB stick. Not being able to lean forward/back in BigScreen isn't a huge deal, but not having full control of hands will be somewhat boring, but not a deal breaker since you can still do the laser pointer.

Still curious what battery life will be. It needs to be at least 3+ hours.

Rumor is this comes out May 1st for at least preorders during the Facebook Developer Conference. With all of the bad FB press I'm hoping they launch it early somehow just in case the conference is a shiatshow

Journalist started getting them today. Really hopefully it is released next Tuesday at Facebook's conference and immediately on the shelves at Best Buy. I have convinced myself I will be buying one as soon as possible. I also talked Feddersen into it so he can join in on our VR watching shows.

Someone on Reddit saw these at best buy ahead of tomorrow's announcement. I'll be buying tomorrow. Not sure on 32 or 64gb version yet

Went with 32gb. Will download games over the next week. If storage doesn't seem to be enough I'll return for 64. Or maybe I'll return if I decide I don't need it at all.

30 second review is that text is crisper than Rift, but overall headset is not as comfortable without the rigid strap. I'll mess with it more tonight and see if I can find a sweet spot with the strap.

The 4 or 5 apps I downloaded were all under 400mb each. 32 gb should be fine.

It's not! Resolution is noticeable better than Rift, especially when you are jumping back and forth between the two devices. The games I played are fun and they do some cool tricks to emulate hand movement when it is actually only tracking rotation.

BigScreen has a nice crisp picture. That will be the killer app for this, and just watching Plex.

I watched Legion while laying in bed on a 30ft screen suspended in outerspace. It really added to the show.

I played a handful of games last night with Feddersen for about 90 minutes. At the end of the session both of us were getting low battery warnings. We played Catan the longest though and that is set to use a higher frames per second than most games so I think it drains extra fast.

Chat is still pretty buggy in some games. We played a co-op zombie shooter, but had no way to talk to each other. In poker you must have headphones on to enable the mic, and Fdeddersen had none. A lot of games also don't let you use the Oculus party chat in game.

All of this stuff will be worked out in time. The device is only a week old.

The most fun we had was playing an entire game of Catan. I was really impressed with how well that worked. It was our first time playing that boardgame, but we figured it out as we went. We both ended up beating the AI player.
