The hierarchy of Handmaid's Tale

Postby Tyler » Sat Apr 21, 2018 10:08 pm

Men
Commanders - the ones "ruling" the new world
Guardian/soldier
Drivers - Nick
Economen - butcher, baker, etc

Women
Wives of Commanders
Aunts - bosses of Handmaids
Econowives - allowed to live with families if they stay in line
Marthas - maids/cooks
Handmaids
Jezebel girls

How does a society run with so little roles? There are 3-dozenish handmaid's in this town, do they only go with commanders? This city seems like the most important one in the country, ground zero, what do other parts of the country look like?

I feel like econowives are above Jezebel girls. I read online that in the book the jezebel girls can pick their partner but they ARE required to have one.

Also I was surprised to see a fertile woman not captured as a handmaid. Is she no longer fertile? Are the handmaids only fertile sinners?

Good call. I moved them up. I wasn't thinking when I added them to the bottom of the list

That is my guess. She hasn't done something "wrong" so she can stay with her husband. You would think the commanders and their wives would be so desperate for kids though that they would be pulling in fertile econowives.
