Confused if he is just behind the scenes, or if he is also acting in it.

Now that Tom Cruise has officially signed on, Universal has set a new release date for its reboot of “The Mummy”: the film will bow on June 9, 2017.
Sofia Boutella is on board to play the classic monster with Alex Kurtzman directing.
Pic was originally set to bow on Mar. 24, 2017.
The studio tapped Kurtzman and Chris Morgan last summer to help develop a universe for Universal in which its classic monster movie library is front and center. Kurtzman is also on board to direct and will produce alongside Morgan as well as Sean Daniel.
Jon Spaihts is penning the script. Plot details are vague other than it will be set in present day, unlike the previous three installments starring Brendan Fraser.
Cruise isn’t expected to produce, but he will play a major part in development. Characters from the monster universe films are expected to crop up in each other’s installments before culminating in an “Avengers”-style tie-in film.
Universal’s executive VP of production Jon Mone and VP of development Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for the studio.

Johnny Depp will star in The Invisible Man in this same universe.

I never thought I'd see a reboot of the mummy.

We all hoped we wouldn't live long enough to see it.

I just hope The Rock reprises his role as Scorpion King.

Re: Tom Cruise’s ‘The Mummy’
I can totally see this happening. With the wildly successful Marvel Universe being both the big screen and TV, then DC launching their universe, I can totally see a movie production company trying to find their own universe to launch.
Back in the day, the monster movies were wildly popular. You had Dracula vs Werewolf and many others including Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and so on. So, if you start by rebooting the Mummy, then have other monster movies in the same universe, you could presumably bring them together for either versus movies or a collaboration much like the Avengers.
I know the new King Kong movie is to take place in the same universe as the Godzilla movie a couple years ago. They do plan, if Kong is successful, to bring both of them into the same movie for a possible King Kong vs Godzilla.

Key phrase there..."back in the day". Do people even care about these classic monsters anymore? I don't see 8 year old boys begging their mom to take them to The Invisible Man or having Mummy bed sheets. Marvel/DC/Star Wars is so marketable and merchandise, I don't think the classic monsters are at all.

These actors must have a lot of faith in this project. I'm sure I'll be proven wrong, but this all sounds dumb and not interesting.

I didn't even consider this being set in modern time. When I heard Tom Cruise was casts I pictured him a period piece, just like the Brendan Fraser movie

Hm. Kind of a mess, but I love the darker tone (compared to the last Mummy series). It's one of those where if reviews are good I will probably try to see it. Not sure about that Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Russel Crowe balloon as Dr. Jekyll.
