Talked about this with some of you this week. What is your favorite store for home improvement stuff?
Menards, or McNards as my grandma calls it, is my favorite. I bought basically everything there to finish my basement and got all the land scaping supplies there. Big fan of the 11% everything rebate, only rebate I really ever mess with. $60 to have stuff dropped off at your house isn't bad either when you're ordering lumber and drywall.
Only downside I can think of is they don't cut plywood to size, you need to go to Home Depot for that.
Shout-out to Tylersucks who works part time at McNards

I prefer the Lowe's but some things I have to get at home Depot by our house, as it's more geared toward construction

Re: Favorite home improvement store
I usually go to home Depot for most things. It's so damn convenient to pull up the app, find the item or a similar item, find the aisle and bin number and walk right to it. I don't like going to Menards that much because their aisles aren't labeled as well. We did meet Larry Menard at the state fair though

I know the McNards layout well because of being dragged their all my life with my dad.
I didn't know Home Depot did the isle/bin location thing.

Usually go to ACE because it's in town or swing by Lowe's in Ames. Otherwise I have to go to Ankeny or Des Moines.

There isn't a McNards in Ames? I smell an opportunity!DannyFanny wrote:Usually go to ACE because it's in town or swing by Lowe's in Ames. Otherwise I have to go to Ankeny or Des Moines.
I do the local hardware store for odds and ends when I'm in the middle of a project and need one thing. I couldn't afford to only buy from them though.

Menards is my preferred store. The layouts are usually the same and I feel like they have better prices than Home Depot or Lowes. My dad also always brought us to Menards in Sioux City or Sioux Falls when we would go shopping so I got used to that.
Re: Favorite home improvement store
My parents ideal Saturday night date night is driving 40 minutes to Spencer, getting Mexican, and then spending thousands at McNards for Travis's house. They have done this dozens of times.

There is a pretty good Mexican place in Spencer.

Menards is the like the Walmart of hardware stores. They carry off brands that are 'good enough' to get the job done and have good prices. If you want name brand, higher end stuff, you go to Lowes. Also..most employees try to hide from guest and typically avoid making direct eye contract cause most of the guests are clueless and cant find a product when it is right behind them. I used to just keep working there cause every holiday they mailed you a decent gift. Now its just a gift card for some crappy Menards branded product like a hat or a coffee mug. One time, I think it was last 4th of July, they must have had a huge, old inventory of sample packets of tanning lotion, cause my holiday gift came in the mail and I was excited to open it, boy was I sad when it was like 30 sample packets of various tanning lotions and bronzing creams. lol

Agree with Tylersucks about the power tools. I don't think I would buy any of that there. Lowe's in house brand of Kobalt is nicer than McNards POWERFORCE. I like mcnards for the supplies.
I'm sorry they mentally abuse you though

Menards carries Bosch, which I like. But yeah, they have lower end "house brands" for some of their power tools. I have a PowerForce vibrating sander. It was cheap but it's worked well enough when I've used it. Other than that I have a Bosh drill/impact driver set and those are the only power tools I have from Menards. I have quite a few hand tools from them though.
