The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
I didn't see a post about it yet.
Sarah and I started watching it the other day. It's pretty fantastic. It's very funny at times but also pretty eye opening to the time period.
Anyone else watched it?

Re: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Never heard of it. 9/10 on imdb so far.
It's the late 1950s and Miriam "Midge" Maisel has everything she has ever wanted -- the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant apartment on New York's Upper West Side. Her seemingly idyllic life takes a surprising turn when she discovers a hidden talent she didn't previously know she had -- stand-up comedy. This revelation changes her life forever as she begins a journey that takes her from her comfortable life on the Upper West Side through the cafes and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she makes her way through the city's comedy industry on a path that could ultimately lead her to a spot on the "Tonight Show" couch. The series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino ("Gilmore Girls").

I was going to start this last night but bailed when I saw it was 60 minutes. I wasn't wanting to stay up that late.

Watched the pilot tonight. It is very bothersome to see how women were treated not that long ago.
"My husband left me" "What did you do to make him leave you?"
Women going to bed in full make makeup and sneaking out of bed to take it off, and then waking up first to put the makeup back on.
Jocelyn and I will continue watching for sure. Midge is very likable

102 last night. We met Joel's parents. I'm glad to see Joel's dad knew right away that Joel messed this up and didn't blame Midge like her own parents did.
"Midge and I are splitting up"
"What's her name?
"huh"
"What's the name of the new girl"
Midge's dad also took her side...but at the same time she wants her to beg for Joel back. Sad that people thought a woman NEEDED a man back then.
Will be interesting to see what Midge does now that she is homeless. Easy thing would be to live with her parents a few floors up from her current apartment.
Lastly, Midge's kids. They are almost completely pointless to the story, other than the story wants Midge to be a mother. There was a scene of her bringing them home and as soon as she got them into her apartment they vanished. No longer important to the plot so they no longer have to exist.

Yeah the kids are not really relevant other than character development. They don't really play any role as actual characters in season 1.Tyler wrote:102 last night. We met Joel's parents. Ah snap! Midge doesn't want Joel back! That's going to cause some family drama.
So far the non-standup part of the show makes me laugh more than the on stage jokes. I wonder if those will get funnier or if it's showing "comedy" was just different back then.

For a show about a comedian the amount of comedy acts is light. It's used more to show how her act develops from raw talking to polished jokesTyler wrote:103

That's what I am looking forward to. The 3 times she has been on stage she's been unprepared and just ranting/rambling funny things. I want to see her develop her routine and stage presence.
Watched 104 last night. Joel and his mistress are living together a block away. Midge sees a lot of stand up shows and takes notes.

You will likely have to wait for season 2 for that then.Tyler wrote:bmyoungs wrote:Source of the post It's used more to show how her act develops from raw talking to polished jokes
